Ten of the passengers were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hampton with various injuries, and four others were treated at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton. Police reports estimated there were 30 passengers riding on the bus from Philadelphia to New York at the time of the accident.

New Jersey State Police determined a blown tire to be the cause of the accident two days later. The blowout caused the driver to lose control of the bus and slide off the road. No charges or citations were issued.

“The SUV went up in the air, hung onto the gate for a few moments then it fell down,” witness Goswin Tyner told reporters from CBS 2 in New York. “It looked like a movie to me. Flynn raced towards Maco’s capsized Acura to rescue her when it was hit by another tractor trailer. Both Flynn and Maco were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said a “sudden shift of wind” blew smoke from the fire across Route 31, limited visibility and contributed to the accident. “It’s just a horrible, horrible thing,” said Avon Police Department Sergeant George Houhoulis. The names of the driver and the victim have not been released, but Sergeant Houhoulis said the men “knew each other well and were friends.”
