The parents of an 11-year-old girl who died after a dump truck hit her school bus in February filed a wrongful death lawsuit, according to sources. Susan and Anthony Tezsla claim the driver of the truck was negligent, and his excessive speed was the reason for the truck accident. “This case involves a heartbreaking, preventable tragedy in which an overloaded dump truck traveling at an excessive speed failed to avoid a school bus loaded with children that failed to observe oncoming traffic before attempting to cross a high-speed intersection,” said Dion Rassias, the family’s attorney. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) launched an investigation along with local police, which is still ongoing. The NTSB concluded that the weight amount in the truck was higher than it should have been which may have contributed to the accident. Attorneys Ronald Spevack and David Spevack will both be attending and participating in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)-Perth Amboy Area Branch 34th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Banquet. The banquet is being held on April 27 at Pines Manor in Edison, New Jersey. Ronald Spevack serves on the NAACP Regional Executive Committee and has been a member since 1960. The Spevack Law Firm is a proud sponsor of the event, which raises money for scholarships. David Spevack serves as a member of the scholarship committee, and he will be announcing the award winners at the banquet again this year. Reverend Anita Burson is the keynote speaker for the event. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and law enforcement across the country will be cracking down. One tagline being used for the campaign: One Text or Call could Wreck it All. Nearly 6,000 people are killed and another 500,000 injured each year nationally in car and truck accidents caused by a distracted driver. Scientific studies have shown that using a cell phone in any fashion while driving reduces your focus on the road by 37 percent. One study from Virginia Tech University found that in a study of truck drivers, they were 23 times more likely to be in a car accident if they were text messaging. It is now illegal for commercial drivers to use a cell phone in any capacity. Texting while driving is currently banned in 34 states and Washington DC.
