A truck accident in Elizabeth, New Jersey on January 24 caused a massive fireball to shoot up into the sky visible for miles, according to ABC Local News. The gasoline tanker explosion caused authorities to shut down Route 1 and Route 9 for hours just before 2 a.m. A car became wedged underneath the tanker, which was carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline. The driver of the car, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene. “The car was traveling northbound on Route 1 and 9, and the truck was going across,” says eyewitness Mike Herrera. “So I guess the car went through the light as the truck was going around the circle, and it went right underneath. A driver died in a truck accident in Bernardsville, New Jersey on January 18, according to MyCentralJersey.com. Two other motorists were trapped in their vehicle in the three-car accident near the intersection of Route 202 and Whitenack Road. The fatal accident is still under investigation, according to Police Chief Kevin Valentine. The Bernardsville Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team are determined to uncover the cause of the accident. The only injuries and fatality were to the drivers of the three vehicles, and no other passengers were involved. The truck driver, 36-year-old Vidal J. Torres-Merced, was flown to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other two drivers, identified as a 53-year-old woman and another woman, were taken to the hospital with injuries. Truck Accident Shuts Down NJ Turnpike Authorities shut down the New Jersey Turnpike on January 12 after a truck accident, according to ABC News. The accident occurred just after 9:00 a.m. when a semi-truck lost control and overturned near mile-marker 9 in Woolwich Township, according to the New Jersey State Police. The cab and trailer separated after the truck overturned. Police shut down both the northbound and southbound lanes as they worked to clean up the accident. No major injuries were reported in the accident. Traffic was flowing smoothly again by about 10:30 a.m. The accident remains under investigation. The cause is unknown and no other vehicles were involved. Potential New Jersey tort reform may place a cap on the amount of punitive damages that courts can give to truck accident victims.
